Permits are required for all day-hiking and overnight backpacking within the Little Colorado River gorge. For those interested, Little Colorado River hiking and backpacking permits can be obtained from the Navajo Nation Parks & Recreation office.
Keep in mind, the backcountry office for the Little Colorado is not a high-volume operation and permit issuance is completely discretionary.
During times of high foot-traffic (especially in Salt Canyon), extreme heat, and when native lands are disrespected, the tribal office can and will suspend the issuance of new permits. This happened most recently in 2018 for a period of 4-5 months. Permit issuance was reported to have been suspended for the summer of 2019, as well. Be respectful, come prepared, and practice “leave no trace” as much as possible.
